Kike Gil interview
Kike Gil: fitness model interview for Skinny Muscles

His name is Kike Gil and he is the first Spanish fitness model to be featured on Skinny Muscles. When he was 10, Father Christmas gave him a pair of 5kg dumbbells. Since then, Kike has been working out. Find out how the “skinny schoolboy” is transforming his physique into that of a promising fitness model.

Would you introduce yourself, please?

My name is Kike Gil and I’m from Barcelona (Spain). I’m 21 years old and I’m currently studying to become a mechanical engineer. I like to think that I’m a friendly person and not the type of guy that goes to the gym to get muscles to scare other people off. Apart from weight lifting, one of the things I enjoy in this life is riding bikes and driving cars.

  • Weight: 76kg [168lbs]
  • Height: 180cm [5’9’’]
  • Bodyfat: 8-10% (bulking)

When did you start your body transformation?

I was the typical skinny schoolboy. When I was 10 my parents gave me a pair of 5kg dumbbells and I started to workout at home. 4 years later my father bought a multi gym machine which I used for lifting heavier weights.

I’ve always wanted to be different and stand out from the crowd. I wanted to be like the older schoolboys. I wanted big muscles and the attention and respect that come with them. That was the reason I started to workout.

I joined my local gym when I was 16 at 60kg but my ever-growing passion for fitness started when I was 19. Now I am 21 and my weight is at 76kg.

As I progressed, I began to notice slight increase in size and strength. My friends kept telling me: “Wow you are getting big!” That motivated me to push even harder. For me, one of the best aspects of working out is when friends and others around you notice the changes in your physique.

Even though I used to workout out 4-5 times a week when I first started going to the gym, I didn’t pay attention to nutrition. In the past 6 months, I have been dieting and pushing myself even harder to get the results I want. I gained 6.5kg of lean muscle mass which is a big achievement for me as a hardgainer.

What keeps you motivated?

This is a good question and an important one too, as sometimes you feel too tired or just lazy to hit the gym. In moments like these I remind myself of my progress and the hard work I’ve put in, in order to get where I am now. I focus on my goals and put some loud music on as I prepare my gym bag ready to hit those weights.

Social media networks also motivate me. It’s nice when other people appreciate my hard work and comment on my achievements. It makes it all worth it and keeps me on track.

When I’ve missed a few sessions and don’t feel like working out anymore, I look back at how skinny I was. That’s enough to get me going again.

How many days per week you workout and your normal weekly workout schedule?

I normally train 5 days a week. I’d like to train 6 days but that’s too much at this stage. My typical routine looks like that:

  • Monday: Chest + Abs
  • Tuesday: Back + Lumb
  • Wednesday: Legs
  • Thursday: Shoulder + Traps
  • Friday: Biceps + Triceps
  • Saturday: Rest
  • Sunday: Rest

I often change my routine so my muscles don’t adapt to the exercises and prevent future gains.

What is your favourite muscle group and your favourite exercise for it?

Chest by far is my favourite. My favourite chest exercise is incline dumbbell press <3.

What is your advice to anyone who wants to gain weight and build muscles?

Don’t give up before you’ve seen any results. Try to get through the first 3, 4, 6 months. That’s when you see that there is more to working out than just lifting weights. It’s a lifestyle, which you will learn to love.

Don’t waste your time at the gym if you are not following a good meal plan. I wasted many years like that.

When at the gym, train hard, as if that’s your last workout session you’ll ever do. Keeping this in mind, it helps me get through the last sets of my workouts. Don’t be afraid to push yourself to doing more. That’s how you transform your body. Otherwise you are just lifting weights at the gym.

What are your ambitions?

I’d love to be part of the fitness industry and earn a living as a fitness model. I have long way yet but I’m doing my best to get there.
