Eric Leto: fitness model interview for Skinny Muscles

It’s not often that we feature an Economics and Maths teacher in the Fitness Models category. Fortunately for us, Eric Leto is a Sports and Fitness Model, certified Diet Consultant and Personal Trainer, 2012 South Africa’s Mr Speedoman and winner of numerous fitness competitions. Let’s find out how he manages to do it all and what his plans for the future are.

Would you introduce yourself, please?

My name is Eric Leto Soares. I am a Sports and Fitness Model based in Europe. I work especially in the sports industry in Germany (for FREIstil Hamburg) and in the United Kingdom (for W Athletic London).

As a 27 year old sponsored athlete, I am a certified Diet Consultant and Personal Trainer. My main occupation (for the time being) is as an Economics and Mathematics teacher at a well respected high school in Luxembourg, where I live around my family and friends.

I weigh 76 kg with a body fat measure of 7 %. I stay lean all year long, as I get jobs and opportunities all the time and I can’t allow myself to get out of shape.

I am a fitness competitor as well; my last competition was the Fit Factor at the Bodypower Expo in May 2013.

I can proudly say that I am 2012 South Africa’s Mr Speedoman (Body Swimwear Competition). I had the opportunity to live in Cape Town (South Africa) for 3 months. It was a majestic experience and a very important moment in my career.

In 2012, I also competed at the Musclemania Model Universe in the United States, where I came placed 3rd in the Fitness Model category.

When did you start your body transformation?

It all started when I played basketball back in the day. The team trainer pushed all the players to do some weight lifting to enhance performance. As soon as I got to work out, I enjoyed it all: the pump, the feeling when you are sore and of course the results which come very fast at the beginning.

As I had more pleasure lifting weights than playing basketball, I dedicated all my leisure time to that amazing lifestyle. I started to take it really seriously competing at a national level as a junior bodybuilder.

I never stopped working out since that day. It’s been 8 years since then. I have achieved a lot on my journey here. I can definitely say that, for me, it was the right path to follow. I am glad I did it.

There is no regret at all: from the moment I adopted a bodybuilder’s lifestyle until today. I have improved in every single way and my vision of life has never been as expansive and complete as it is today.

What keeps you motivated?

I set myself goals to achieve on short and long term. Just by way of example: when you enter a path without knowing where it will lead and take you, you will be questioning yourself too much after a while and 90% of this sensible situation, you will fall in to the gap of failure.

You need to know exactly where you are going, be it a competition, or a photo shoot, or even just a personal body achievement (by achieving more muscle mass, getting leaner to a certain body fat).

You need to know what kind of objectives you want and plan to achieve them.

How many days per week you workout and your normal weekly workout schedule?

I weightlift 5 days a week and I do a single cardio session once a week, so a 6 times a week schedule.

  • 30 min Cardio Session (HIIT on a bike)

What is your favourite muscle group and your favourite exercise for it?

My favourite muscle group is definitely the chest. Incline bench press on the Smith machine is my favourite exercise to develop my upper chest.

What’s your diet like?

I follow a Low-Carb, Low-Fat, High-Protein Diet during my on season period.

An example of my daily diet is something like this:

Meal 1

  • 40gr of oats
  • 8 egg whites
  • 25gr of peanuts
  • 5gr of BCAA
  • 1 Vitamin C tablet

Meal 2

  • 200gr of lactose free cottage cheese
  • 100gr of chicken
  • 2 rice cakes

Meal 3

  • 240gr of salmon
  • 300gr of green vegetables
  • 40gr of brown rice

Meal 4

  • 1 omega 3 tablet
  • 200gr of chicken
  • 100gr of spinach

Before and After Workout

  • 5gr of BCAA

Meal 5

  • 1 omega 3 tablet
  • 250gr of cod fish
  • 300gr of green vegetables
  • 80gr of sweet potatoes

What is your advice to anyone who wants to gain weight and build muscles?

Anybody who wants to see gains needs a proper diet. More than 70% of the body transformation depends on the right nutrition.

“Train hard and eat healthy” – that’s the motto. Unfortunately there are no secrets to achieving a better body, but hard work always pays off. If you want to see great results, I suggest you always train to maintain hypertrophy at its highest.

Always interact with compound movements (squats, bench press, deadlift, pull ups). Those exercises keep your growth hormone function very elevated.

What are your ambitions?

My biggest ambition is to motivate people getting into a healthier lifestyle. I always try to be an inspiration for people in order to be a source of motivation for them. Show them to keep chasing after their dreams and that hard and clever work is the key to success, in no matter which specific area in life.

Thanks to this particular lifestyle, people learn to achieve certain values that matter in life and keep them straight against obstacles; discipline, dedication, planning, organization, a strong will and, of course, the know-how of goal setting and reaching.

The most satisfying feeling I can ever get, is when somebody reaches out to me and tells me “Because of you, I didn’t give up! Thank you for your support and motivation!” This is what I call a real reward of my work; being the catalyst for someone’s positive life change or success.

My future plans are to improve my shape both physically and mentally. Not sure yet if I’m competing again in the upcoming months, but I will definitely be more present in the fitness industry. I am also working on a new concept of coaching and lifestyle changing.

My biggest wish is to realize and launch this amazing idea and keep helping people out even more with health and lifestyle matters at an international scale.

Anything else you like to add?

In August I am traveling to Miami, where I shoot with famous photographers in the industry. So I am on Shred Mode at the moment, in order to get in the best shape of my life. There are going to be some killer shots. Definitely.

I am also launching my online coaching website, so anyone around the globe can access my nutrition and training plans. I will be able to reach people all over the world for private coaching and mentoring. As I always focus on quality, my work and professional services are really distinct in every kind of way.
